Altair adds virtual battery software to Hyperworks simulation platform

Software specialist Altair has added a new battery simulation software, Sendyne’s CellMod Virtual Battery, to the Altair Partner Alliance (APA), its suite of 3rd-party software products available to customers of its Hyperworks product simulation platform.

CellMod is a virtual lithium-ion battery that can predict cell and pack behavior, including thermal behavior It accepts inputs including current, ambient temperature, and time-step, and will output voltage, cell internal temperature, surface temperature, SOC, and any other cell internal state variable. CellMod can also simulate the behavior of aged cells. Battery designers can scale the virtual battery to represent parallel and serial cell combinations via Sendyne’s companion BasicPackMod.

Unlike conventional equivalent circuit (EC) models, CellMod accounts for physical processes taking place inside the cells, including diffusion in solids, diffusion in electrolytic solutions, reaction kinetics, charge transport, heat transport, etc. Because of this, Altair says CellMod can predict battery cell behavior with an accuracy that is higher than 97% under a wide range of test conditions.

The default battery model used in CellMod is the Panasonic NCR18650A. Altaic says designers can use this version as a stand-in to represent a generic lithium-ion battery and still provide better accuracy than what is offered by an EC model. Design teams that require a high level of accuracy can tailor data with cell-specific versions that represent any type of lithium-ion cell, including NMC and LMO, LFP, NCA, and all iterations of these cells.

Altair Senior VP Richard Yen said, “Sendyne has developed the first ever lithium-ion, virtual, physics-based battery model for real-time co-simulation. Engineers will now have the ability to virtually test battery packs with higher degrees of accuracy in their design models for hardware and software in the loop, thermal simulation, online battery prediction, and more.”
