During EVS35 in Olso, Vietnamese EV automaker VinFast outlined its plans for expansion overseas, alongside the European debut of its VF 8 and VF 9 EVs. During the presentation, VinFast shared intentions to open at least fifty stores spread throughout Europe in countries like Germany, France, and the Netherlands to start. Additionally, VinFast shared new sales policies exclusive to those European markets.

Lilium teams with Honeywell and DENSO to manufacture motor for electric Lilium Jet

Lilium, the developer of an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) jet, has partnered with Honeywell and DENSO, who will co-develop and manufacture the electric motor that will power the Lilium Jet’s engines.

Honeywell, which invested in Lilium in 2021, is already developing the Lilium Jet’s avionics and flight control systems. Honeywell also has an alliance with automotive giant DENSO to develop electric aviation solutions. Lilium says the new e-motor will benefit from Honeywell’s aerospace expertise as well as DENSO’s experience in high-quality volume production.

The three companies have been working on the proprietary Lilium e-motor for nearly two years. Its air-cooled design is meant to offer structural simplicity and ease of maintenance compared with traditional liquid cooling systems, and thus the potential for lower aircraft operating costs. The e-motor has its rotor and stator in a centrifugal or radial configuration, as opposed to more traditional axial designs. Lilium says this lowers the motor’s weight, manufacturing costs and susceptibility to foreign object damage. The first prototypes will be designed to deliver 100 kW of power from a system weighing just over 4 kg.

“Lilium’s procurement strategy is to engage with the technology providers with the most suitable expertise,” said Lilium COO Yves Yemsi. “We are already making great progress with Honeywell on its Honeywell Anthem integrated flight deck and flight control computers, and we are delighted to deepen our relationship by also partnering with Honeywell and DENSO on our e-motor.”

Electreon to provide wireless charging infrastructure to Israeli bus operator Electra Afikim

Wireless charging provider Electreon has signed an agreement with Electra Afikim, which operates some 1,400 buses on 450 lines in Israel. Electreon will provide Electra Afikim with wireless charging infrastructure that will enable simultaneous charging of 30 buses.

As part of the agreement Electreon will provide maintenance, support and operation services for the next 12 years.

This is the second commercial deal signed by Electreon in Israel. The company sold wireless charging services for 200 buses to the Dan bus company in October 2021.

Israel’s National Public Transportation Authority invested about $2.9 million in the project. Electreon is confident that the agency’s approval of wireless charging will allow other Israeli public transportation operators to duplicate the project and quickly advance green transportation in Israel.

Over the past weeks Electreon has announced several other international deals, including a development project with Finnish infrastructure services company Destia, a collaboration with wireless charging research center ASPIRE in Utah, and a wireless electric road project for trucks and buses in Gotland, Sweden.

“Since the transition to electrification depends on the allocation of infrastructure, powerful grid connections and prolonged bureaucracy, we were happy to partner with Electreon, which offers a more cost-effective and accessible alternative to charging electric buses,” said Oded Cohen, CEO of Electra Afikim. “Electra Afikim already operates 25 electric buses on unique BRT lines in the city of Ashdod, and strives to expand the use of green-energy buses.”

“2022 is Electreon’s year of transition from planning, development and construction of supply chains towards large-scale production and sales,” said Oren Ezer, CEO of Electreon. “The wireless static charging project signed with Electra Afikim is a model that the company intends to replicate in many cities around the world, along with dynamic wireless charging. These projects will allow the company to present the advantages of the technology, including reducing the size of the battery, extending the working time without compromising the way the buses operate, and distributing the power supply around the clock.”

Chevrolet cuts prices for 2023 Bolt EV and EUV, boosts ad spending

The Bolt is back, and it’s cheaper than ever. GM resumed Bolt production in April following a major battery recall last August. Now the company says it will cut prices on the Bolt EV and EUV by up to 18%, and plans to build a record number of units this year.

The 2023 Chevy Bolt EV will start at $26,595, including destination charges, down from $32,495. The Bolt EUV starts at $28,195, down from $35,695. Production of the 2023 models is slated to begin at the GM Lake Orion plant in Michigan in late July.

The Bolt EV was launched in 2016, and sales hit a high of 24,828 vehicles in 2021.

The Bolt EV and EUV were each given a major refresh for the 2022 models, and GM says there will be only minor updates for 2023. Each sports a 200 hp, 266 lb-ft motor on the front wheels, and a 65 kWh battery pack that delivers a range of 259 miles for the Bolt EV and 247 miles for the Bolt EUV.

The 2022 model benefitted from a $5,500 price cut compared to the 2021 model. The latest reduction is a rare bit of good news for car buyers, as the average price of a new vehicle in the US vicinity has soared to around $45,000.

More welcome news: Chevrolet says the Bolt EUV will have the second-highest ad spend this year, behind only Silverado electric pickup.

“This change reflects our ongoing desire to make sure Bolt EV/EUV are competitive in the marketplace,” GM said. “Affordability has always been a priority for these vehicles.”
