Tesla raises $680 million for Gigafactory 3 in China, still a lot more to go

When Tesla announced its Gigafactory 3 in China earlier this summer, there was a big question mark around the financing for the massive new factory.

CEO Elon Musk has since confirmed that they plan to borrow money from local lenders and it looks like they already raised around $680 million, but there’s still a lot more to go. more…

Tesla Ups Investment Big Time For Gigafactory 3 In China

Tesla invests in Chinese subsidiary to build Gigafactory 3

The Chinese Tesla factory in Shanghai announced this summer soon should move to the execution phase, as on September 7 Tesla increased the registered capital of Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. from 100 million yuan ($16.6 million) to 4.67 billion yuan ($680 million).

That’s enough to start the work at the Tesla Gigafactory 3, which in total is expected to cost at least $2 billion. The facility will produce up to 500,000 cars (and battery packs) annually.

Tesla didn’t pick up a joint venture partner, so the hope is that China will not change its mind and let Tesla (and other foreign manufacturers) to produce and sell cars on its own. Thanks to this, Tesla will be able to completely control the entire production process without being subject to others, according to James Chao, IHS Asia Pacific Managing Director and Automotive Industry Analyst.

It’s anticipated that the Chinese Gigafactory will produce Tesla Model Y (an affordable electric SUV).

Renault ZOE 40 Goes 351 Miles On Single Charge

The Renault ZOE can go further than one might think, but at the expense of speed.

The top French electric car, the Renault ZOE, is rated for about 300 km (186 miles) the in real world, or 200 km (124 miles) in the winter, using a 41 kWh battery.

Recently, Renault shared an image with a result of 564.9 km (351 miles) on a single charge done by some enthusiast in France.

The short news doesn’t go into details, but what we see is:

  • total energy consumption: 44 kWh
  • average energy consumption: 7.9 kWh/100 km (62 miles)
  • average speed: 44.6 km/h (27.7 mph)

The question is how ZOE was able to use 44 kWh from 41 kWh, but the extra 3 kWh (7.3%) probably comes from regenerative braking, we believe.

Watch Boring Company Machine Move Via Xbox Controller

Were you ever curious what The Boring Company machine looks like in action?

It’s not always very easy to report on Boring Company news. There’s often not that much information and it’s not a plug-in, although it’s related to electric cars since it’s related to Tesla and Elon Musk, and since the boring machines may eventually be electric. Nonetheless, there’s still a regular spattering of interesting news to share about this innovative company. The concept changes on a regular basis, so we try to keep tabs on what’s happening.

In a recent tweet, Musk mentioned the effort and referred to it as an “underground volcano lair.” Perhaps he’s spending some of his time with a sleeping bag and pillow overseeing production efforts in his man cave? At any rate, the tweet seemingly came out of nowhere and could only have been a reference to the boring tunnel. Musk tweeted:

Sifting through some earlier tweets from The Boring Company’s Twitter page, we found a video that had been posted just a few hours prior. It shows a close-up view of one of the boring machines, and it’s being operated with an Xbox controller.

It’s neat to see the machine in action, but it’s more intriguing to wonder what (if any) application there may be here. Further, with Musk’s above tweet, plus this video — neither of which reveal much of anything very specific — what will the next big Boring Company announcement be?

How The Tesla Model 3 Is The #1 Selling Car In The U.S.

It is, but only if we take a different, more financially-oriented approach, to the conventional look at sales.

Clearly, Tesla’s Model 3 didn’t beat all the other gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles in terms of sheer sales volume. However, the California-based carmaker hit nearly 50% market share for electric vehicles, according to our own estimates. Furthermore, the Model S and Model X captured 15% share of the market. But that’s not where the good news for the carmaker ends.

According to  Twitter user Troy Teslike, who polls those who order Model 3s and publishes some nifty statistics, the average sale price for the Tesla Model 3 surged past $55,759 in the last couple of months (in fact, it hit $60,000 just recently). This, alongside record deliveries in the last two months, pushed the Tesla Model 3 into the #1 best-selling car spot in the US by revenue in both July and August.

And it now seems all the early production woes and delivery problems have been resolved, as Tesla is seemingly plowing along in both revenue and vehicle deliveries.

According to CleanTechnica, the rundown for the Top 5 best-selling cars, ranked by revenue (July-August) is:

  1. Tesla Model 3 – $992.5 Million
  2. Toyota Camry – $765.4 Million
  3. Honda Accord – $678.7 Million
  4. Honda Civic –  $567.2 Million
  5. Toyota Corolla – $536 Million

If and when Tesla is able to deliver the cheaper, $35,000 variant of the Model 3, we feel that the company will be well on its way to becoming one of the biggest carmakers out there. Even though the onslaught of the German car makers and their EVs is on the horizon, Tesla seems to have solidified its position in the market.

And from what we’re seeing in the last few weeks, the only way for the upbeat and rather revolutionary carmaker is up. Let’s just hope all of the other automakers follow along and we have a more environmentally-friendly future ahead of us.
