Watch Tesla Model 3 Performance Lay Down New 1/4-Mile Record

There’s a new mark to beat if you’re trying for the record.

By now, the world knows the Tesla Model 3 Performance is lightning quick. It dusted a BMW M3 just the other day. But did you know it can rip down the 1/4-mile track in less than 11.8 seconds? Sure you did, as DragTimes laid down an 11.782 run with it against that poor Bimmer, but today there’s new video and a new record.

The new record was reportedly set with the Model 3 Performance at 11.722 seconds for the quarter, an impressive figure for sure. State-of-charge was 95%, which is probably ideal for the run.

We’ve seen the Model 3 Performance rip to 60 MPH in a record-shattering 3.13 seconds, but up until recently, there haven’t been a whole lot of attempts in the quarter. Now, with this new time set, we suspect owners will hit the tracks in droves in an attempt to gain the crown.

Video description:

After an initial run of 11.75 seconds, The Performance Model 3 set a new 1/4 mile record at 11.72 seconds. SOC for the record-setting run was 95%.

  • R/T … 0.010

  • 1000 … 9.782
  • 1/4th E/T … 11.72

The record-setting time belongs to car and driver: George Parrott, former President of the Sacramento EV association. George has been a long time and dedicated advocate of the EV movement.

Porsche unveils new modular concept for fast charging stations

Porsche has been ahead of the curve on fast charging, developing its own 800-volt charging system, while also participating in cross-brand infrastructure projects including Electrify America and Ionity. Earlier this year, the company announced plans to deploy a network of 500 charging stations in North America in time for the launch of its Taycan EV next year.

Now Porsche has unveiled a plan for a new kind of modular fast charging system. The system consists of: the FlexBox, a transformer that provides up to 36 kilovolts; the PowerBox, an AC-DC converter; the CoolingBox, which provides liquid cooling for the charging poles and power electronics; and a compact and stylish charging pole.

The FlexBoxes can be stacked up fairly far from the actual charging points, with a distance of “up to 200 meters between the transformer station and PowerBox and up to 100 meters between the PowerBox and the charging station.” The charging pole is intended to be the only part of the system visible to drivers.

“The charging stations are the single customer touchpoint with the driver of an electric car,” says Porsche. “As the engineers removed everything from the charging station that wasn’t absolutely required at the customer touchpoint and packed it into FlexBoxes, a streamlined appearance could be achieved – and thus a typical Porsche design identity.”

Porsche claims an efficiency of over 95 % for the complete system.

Porsche has also created the more compact ComboBox, which combines the PowerBox and the CoolingBox into a single unit; and the ChargeBox, which incorporates a 70 kWh to 140 kWh battery pack for locations where the grid connection is insufficient for high-power charging.

Electric Bumper Car Spotted In Traffic Casually Waiting At Intersection

Taking electric cars fandom to another level.

What’s the first vehicle you drove? A push car? A motorized sports car for kids? For a lot of people, their first experience behind the wheel would probably be inside a bumper car. You know, those electric one-seaters (sometimes two) that are often seen in theme parks or carnivals. Many will agree with me that it’s an important part of childhood, except maybe if you’ve had an accident while riding one when you were a child, but I digress.

With this in mind, what would you feel if you see a bumper car at an intersection?

.embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }

That’s what happened in this video, which was submitted to Daily Mail UK by Ben Peters, who got the footage from the dash cam of an HD Property Services company vehicle. It was a sight to see, and Peters said he couldn’t believe what he saw that day.

Called dodgem in the U.K., the bumper car was seen nonchalantly waiting for the right time to turn at an intersection in a residential road. The driver was a middle-aged man wearing a vest. We’re not sure why he’s driving a bumper car or what his intentions are, but we’re pretty sure of one thing – he’s a fan of electric cars. Well, sort of.

Now, if you ask us if this is legal, we honestly don’t know. Maybe the guy has converted it into something that can be used on public roads, but we can only assume. Or maybe he had too much fun driving one in a theme park and just decided to take the bumper car home.

For the record, this isn’t the first that we’ve seen a bumper car outside its natural habitat. We’ve seen one before, and it was converted into an off-roader. The one from the U.K. is way cooler, though, as it looks less modified.

Liberty Access Technologies’ HYDRA Custom Installed at Carillon, Now Equipped for Teslas and Standard EV Chargers

 — Liberty Access Technologies is pleased to announce that its Hydra™ R EV charger is now equipped to work with both Standard and Tesla EV chargers. The company has installed a charging system at the Carillon Miami Wellness Resort, the world famous resort and spa located on the water in Miami Beach.

Hydra™ R is essentially a “splitter” allowing for centralized management and access control of multiple chargers. It is ideally suited for workplace, fleet, retail and multifamily commercial properties. Hydra differs significantly from conventional EV chargers due it’s ability to provide valuable real time data and feedback to owners with regard to usage and costs across multiple charging stations. The Hydra system allows you to be “greener” in that it is tied into the local electrical grid and can tell you when the best times to charge are to save money and reduce carbon emissions. The system is comprised of the Hydra Control Module which centralizes access control, data recording and communications as well as a keypad that is used to initiate charging that can be activated via code sent to a mobile phone that expires after a certain period of time.

The industry leading Hydra™ R can directly control power supplied to each charger, and can work with virtually all brands, giving owners a choice in EVSE hardware. Using the Hydra™ R is simple. Drivers merely connect their EV, enter the charger number and charge authorization code in the keypad and begin their charging session. Hydra™ R pairs the driver’s code with usage data, and sends it to Liberty’s servers every 15 minutes. The records can be viewed by owners to prepare billing and optimize usage to minimize costs and reduce carbon emissions by promoting charging during periods of lower electrical demand.

Hydra™ R is truly multi-functional and supports a variety of access control and billing methods, including credit card, fleet fueling cards and HID access badges. The EV charger uses “Revenue Grade” (.01 kWh accuracy) meters to send usage data to Hydra R main board for storage.

The Hydra™ R charger can be seen in action at its recent customized installation by Carillon resort and spa. The installation operates with five Level 2 (208v) chargers. Three of these have been provided by Tesla for charging its popular Model S, X and the coming Model 3s. The system has been installed by Len Shapiro, owner of America’s Best Air Conditioning, Heating and Electrical, and has 2 Clipper Creek chargers that can also charge all other types of EVs and PlugIn Hybrids, using the standard connector.

“The Carillon has a long history of offering the latest and best amenities to its customers and guests,” said Len Shapiro. “This is their way of helping their tenants and guests add to the green economy.” Len added, “It was a pleasure to work with the Carillon team in order to get this leading edge EV charging system installed and ready to use.”

“This is a wonderful opportunity for Liberty to provide our latest control equipment that can manage both standard EV chargers and also the Tesla chargers within the same system,” added Chris Outwater, President of Liberty PlugIns. “Our Hydra product allows the site owner to mix various types and speeds of charging and also manage the overall electrical load.”

Liberty Access Technologies (LAT) specializes in access control systems for electric vehicle charging in the parking industry, fleet EV and multi-tenant dwellings. LAT’s patented Synchronous Code Generation technology enables secure charging without expensive networks, and the Hydra Multi EVSE Control system enables cost effective large scale EV charging solutions for workplace and multi-tenant. Our mission is to use our patented technology to enable our customers to control access and costs and reduce electricity consumption via our “grid-aware” technology. Almost 30,000 Plug-In Electric Cars Sold In Europe In August 2018

U.S. plug-in electric car sales finally way higher than in Europe.

In August, plug-in electric car sales in Europe increased by 42% year-over-year to 29,949 at an average market share of 2.7%.

After the first eight months fo 2018, sales amounted to some 242,000 (up 41%) at an average 2.3% market share.

As August is a rather slow month, now we look forward to a new record – maybe in September.

Plug-In Electric Car Sales In Europe – August 2018

The three top-selling models for the year are without change, although the Nissan LEAF doesn’t shine as brightly as before.

  • Nissan LEAF – 2,924 and 24,539 YTD
  • Renault ZOE – 2,213 and 21,127 YTD
  • BMW i3 – 1,675 and 14,664 YTD

Interestingly, the new Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid was the 3rd best-selling model in Europe – 1,848! Also, the PHEV Panamera noted a strong 850 sales.

On the other hand, Hyundai Kona Electric starts with 455 – not bad compared to just 86 Jaguar I-PACE.

Registration stats for Europe are provided by EV Sales Blog:

The comparison between Europe and U.S. starts to change as the Tesla Model 3 enabled the U.S. to take over in July and extend the advantage in August. In September, it will be a huge disproportion, we believe.

Nissan Adds Albon To Formula E Driver Lineup: Joins Buemi

Nissan e.dams has picked Formula 2 frontrunner Alexander Albon for its debut Formula E season, alongside 2015/16 champion Sebastien Buemi.

Albon has already had an FE test with the team when it was running as Renault’s works operation.

The 22-year-old Anglo-Thai is currently third in the F2 standings with e.dams’ non-electric arm DAMS.

“The level of competition in the series is intense, and I’m looking forward to testing myself against some of the best drivers in the world,” Albon said.

“Electric street racing will be a new challenge for me, but working with Sebastien as my teammate will be a huge help, as he has set the benchmark for performance in the series.”

Nissan is taking over the e.dams entry from its sister brand from the 2018/19 season, and announced earlier this year that it would be dispensing with Nicolas Prost as Buemi’s teammate.

The announcement of Albon’s drive was also official confirmation that Buemi would be staying on through the Renault to Nissan transition as expected.

Team principal Jean-Paul Driot said: “Sebastien has been an important part of the e.dams team since our first Formula E race four years ago in China.

“We know Alex well from his performances with DAMS in Formula 2, and we’re excited to bring his talent into the Formula E championship.”

Nissan e.dams had been linked to an array of other drivers since Prost’s exit was announced, and recently confirmed it had been in talks with NIO FE racer Oliver Turvey.

Rivian Electric Truck Spotted Doing Some Serious Off-Roading

InsideEVs has happened upon some new, exclusive spy shots of Rivian’s upcoming electric truck and it’s pretty sweet.

Rivian Automotive has been sort of lurking in the depths of vehicle development for a number of years. Ever since we were apprised of the company and its plans, we have been covering it as much as possible. Sadly, there hasn’t been that much information to share. But, that’s about to change drastically, and very soon, as Rivian is set to show the world its products.

In the meantime, we’ve been fortunate to receive some interesting spy shots from time to time. This latest round suggests that Rivian is testing the upcoming pickup truck off the pavement. If you really dissect the photos and look closely, it’s pretty clear that the trucks employ an adjustable and adaptive air suspension. Take a look at the spy shots and notice the varying ride heights. And is that quad motors we see there, too?

Of course, this is all speculative until the reveal, but our trained eyes don’t miss much.

We can’t stress enough how excited we are that the world’s first all-electric pickup truck and sizable, highly-capable SUV are coming soon!

What do you think? Please leave us your valuable insight in the comment section below.
