UK firm Connected Kerb installs 10,000 public chargers in 2021

UK charging infrastructure specialist Connected Kerb is rolling out on-street chargers at an impressive pace. The company has installed 1,000 chargers so far this year, and expects to have 5,500 installed across the UK, with contracts secured for 30,000 more, by the end of 2022. By 2030, the company hopes to have 190,000 chargers installed.

EV ownership in the UK is skyrocketing—pure EV sales are up by 88 percent year-to-date compared to 2020, and one in four UK households say they intend to go electric within the next five years. However, some 62 percent of UK drivers don’t have access to off-street parking or a dedicated parking space, so more on-street public charging will be essential. According to Connected Kerb, there are currently only around 1,000 on-street chargers outside of London, and just one for every 52 EVs on UK roads.

Connected Kerb works with local councils (municipal governments) to get chargers installed quickly. The UK government finances 75 percent of the cost of installations through the On-Street Residential Charging Scheme (ORCS). In many cases, Connected Kerb provides the remaining 25 percent, offering a zero-cost installation for local councils.

Connected Kerb recently announced a contract to install 10,000 chargers for the West Sussex Council by 2030. Most will be deployed on streets, in public car parks and at community facilities. The Kent County Council has chosen Connected Kerb to deploy at least 600 chargers by 2023, many of them in parish towns and rural areas. Other recently announced deployments will take place in Coventry (300 chargers), Cambridge (360), Plymouth (100), Milton Keynes (250), Warrington (30), Medway (30), and Glasgow.

“Knowing you can arrive at virtually any location, at any time, in any vehicle and cheaply charge your battery without inconvenience or faff is the reality we have to deliver to create an EV society,” said Connected Kerb CEO Chris Pateman-Jones. “Our rollout of public chargers—one of the most ambitious the UK has ever seen—encapsulates that future. With deals confirmed for 10,000 chargers this year alone, and 30,000 more expected next year, we are demonstrating that we’re getting on with the job and delivering the change that needs to happen.”

Allison Transmission to invest $42 million in Jing-Jin Electric’s IPO

Allison Transmission will participate in the initial public offering of electric motor, inverter and propulsion system supplier Jing-Jin Electric (JJE), making a strategic investment of approximately $42 million. FAW Group will also participate as a strategic investor in the IPO.

Allison’s investment in JJE follows a recently announced strategic partnership between the two companies, and an earlier debt financing commitment by Allison that will directly support JJE’s North American commercial electric product development, testing and manufacturing efforts.

“The inclusion of Allison as a strategic investor in our IPO demonstrates our confidence in the combined capabilities of the strategic partnership to accelerate global electric vehicle development and offer innovative and reliable electrified propulsion solutions to commercial vehicle manufacturers around the world.,” said Ping Yu, Chairman of Jing-Jin Electric.

European shipping company orders 100 Volvo FM Electric trucks

DFDS, a shipping and logistics firm based in Northern Europe, has placed an order with Volvo Trucks for 100 Volvo FM Electric trucks. The deal is the largest commercial order to date for Volvo electric trucks.

Deliveries of the trucks will start in the fourth quarter of 2022 and continue throughout 2023. Volvo Financial Services will provide a financing solution.  DFDS will use the e-trucks for both short- and long-haul transport.

The FM Electric can carry a gross combination weight of 44 tons, and has a range of up to 300 km. It can be charged via overnight depot charging (AC) and high-power charging en route (DC). Volvo Trucks started serial production of electric trucks in 2019, and its product range now includes six electric truck models—the Volvo FH, FM, FMX, FE and FL, and the VNR, sold in North America.

“Our target for 2030 is that half of our global truck deliveries will be electric,” says Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks. “We are pleased to see that growing interest among our customers is starting to be reflected in firm orders. We are showing the world that electrified heavy truck transport is a viable solution already today. I believe this will encourage many more customers to confidently take the first step in their own electrification journey.”

“At DFDS, we know how important electrification is in the journey to reach our CO2 targets, and I hope we can inspire others as we move forward in this vital transition,” says DFDS Executive VP Niklas Andersson.

SES builds a pilot production line for solvent-in-salt electrolyte production

Battery supplier SES has built a pilot production line capable of scaling up high-concentration, solvent-in-salt electrolyte production. The pilot line is capable of synthesizing SES’s proprietary solvent and manufacturing a high-concentration solvent-in-salt electrolyte formulation designed for SES’s hybrid Li-metal automotive batteries. The facility is currently capable of producing 5 tons of electrolyte per year, and the company says this can be expanded to 250 tons to meet projected future demand.

SES’s battery technology features proprietary solvent molecules that have low volatility and are self-extinguishing. SES says its unique electrolyte formulation is stable with lithium metal, and enables hybrid batteries that have high energy density over a wide range of temperature and power requirements, as well as enhanced cycle life and safety.

“This pilot production capability at our Shanghai facility will ensure that SES will be prepared to meet electrolyte supply needs,” said SES founder Qichao Hu. “Our electrolyte pilot production capability is a key enabler for SES’s development of automotive-sized hybrid Li-metal batteries.”

I tested Radio Flyer’s first electric bike, and it’s even more fun than their red wagons!

Remember the good old days of your childhood, yanking your siblings around in a little red wagon or racing it down the hill like a rocket ship? I definitely do, and so when the original little red wagon company Radio Flyer announced that they were getting into electric bicycles earlier this summer, I was hot to trot for a test ride. Now that I’ve spent several days testing the Flyer M880 midtail cargo e-bike, here are my thoughts on this interesting new addition to the e-bike landscape.
