LA Teams With 30 Cities To Get Cheaper EVs For Fleets

Many people are in the market for a new car and cities have the same issue with fleets. How can one push those to adopt EVs?

According to Wired, Los Angeles is upping its game to assure that EVs take precedence. While many new car shoppers may not see the benefits of EVs, the city can only hope that fleets understand, which may eventually motivate individual buyers. This is critical since LA operates some 11,ooo vehicles currently. The article explains:

Los Angeles operates about 11,000 vehicles and pieces of equipment, including shared company ‘pool’ cars, buses, street sweepers, and garbage trucks. (For comparison, that’s going on twice the size of UPS’ delivery fleet of 5,900 vehicles.) The city, long a leader in the war on smog, wants to switch as many of those vehicles as possible to electrics. It’s a great move for the planet, for Angeleno’s lungs, and for politicians who want to run on an environmentally friendly ticket.

This goal is difficult, however, since EVs cost more. But LA is working to alleviate that and involve many other cities in its efforts. According to the source article, an electric bus may cost some $300,000 more than a traditional bus. But still, LA officials are willing to do what it takes to assure EV adoption and clean air. Wired shared:

Los Angeles announced today it is teamed up with 30 US cities total to collectively work for better deals on electric cars (18 of them have committed to purchases already as ‘founding cities’). Altogether, these metropoles own 115,000 vehicles that need replacing at some point, with a value of $10 billion—a chunky number that makes negotiating easy. And in an effort to spur even more electric uptake, the deals they reach will be available to any city in the country via a new website, launching today. It’s collective bargaining, but for cars.

The new website is EVfleets.org. The goal of LA’s new plan is to make it less of a hassle for all cities (even smaller ones) to move forward in this combined effort to adopt electric cars. Cars like the Chevrolet Bolt EV are now available on the new site for $5,000 under MSRP, at $32,702. The Ford Fusion Energi (PHEV) is also an option, with a $2,000 discount. This means cities don’t have to spend extra time negotiating a fleet discount since those are already being offered up ahead of the deal.

We certainly hope many cities will adopt such plans and also many more local governments will initiate goals much like that of Los Angeles.

Tesla Model 3 Production Hits 90,000: Pace Now Below 4,000/Week

Tesla is on track to produce the 100,000th Model 3 by the end of this month.

According to Bloomberg’s Tesla Model 3 Tracker (yes, we know it’s not always 100% accurate, but it’s close), cumulative production of the Tesla Model 3 stands now at 90,198 (the numbers are estimated).

While the overall pile of Model 3 is growing, the pace is a little disappointing because Bloomberg’s tool shows just 3,486 units a week in the past seven days. The peak was above 5,000 at the end of June, while the target for the end of August was 6,000.

The highest registered VIN by Tesla was 112,315 (as of September 8).

With almost three weeks to the end of the quarter, Tesla still has a strong chance of reaching the milestone of the 100,000th Model 3 produced, and the majority of those cars will be from the current quarter.

Production and deliveries of the Model 3 in previous quarters thus far:

  • 2017’Q3 – 260 produced, and 222 delivered
  • 2017’Q4 – 2,425 produced and 1,542 delivered
  • 2018’Q1 – 9,766 produced and 8,182 delivered
  • 2018’Q2 – 28,578 produced and 18,440 delivered
  • 2018’Q3 – already >49,169 produced

Range: 310 miles; 136/123 mpg-e. Still maintaining a long waiting list as production ramps up slowly, the new compact Tesla Model 3 sedan is a smaller and cheaper, but no less stylish, alternative, to the fledgling automaker’s popular Model S. This estimate is for a Model 3 with the “optional” (at $9,000) long-range battery, which is as of this writing still the only configuration available. The standard battery, which is expected to become available later in 2018, is estimated to run for 220 miles on a charge.

Fully Charged Tries Out Hyundai NEXO Hydrogen Fuel Cell Car

Hyundai believes in hydrogen fuel cell cars.

In the latest episode of Fully Charged, Robert Llewellyn tests the second-generation hydrogen fuel cell model from Hyundai – the NEXO – in South Korea.

Hyundai makes excellent plug-in cars like the IONIQ and the most recent Kona Electric, but the company backs its alternative powertrain approach with FCVs too.

The NEXO can go up to 600 km (373 miles) on a single tank of hydrogen and, as it turns out in the video, it clears the air from emissions too.

  • about 370 miles (595 km)
  • 0-60 mph in 9.5 seconds
  • 120 kW and 395 Nm electric motor
  • fuel cell is able to provide around 95 kW of power, together with 40 kW from the battery, total output of 135 kW is available

Top Five Fastest-Selling Used Cars Are All Hybrid And Electric

While many used cars tend to stay on the market for over a month, hybrid and electric cars are the exception.

It’s no surprise that electrified vehicles are quick sellers on used car lots. This is something that we’ve covered on a few occasions in the past. Recently, iSeeCars sent us out an update. According to the website, the average car stays on dealer lots for 46.4 days before someone purchases it. Some cars even hang out for much longer. iSeeCars did a recent study to find out exactly which late-model cars are the easiest to move and the findings are increasingly compelling.

We’d like to point out that this is surely not one of those studies that take a small sample and try to extrapolate the data. iSeeCars analyzed a whopping four million late-model vehicles to determine which cars sell the slowest, as well as which cars sell the fastest. As it turns out, the top five quick-selling cars were all electrified and each only took about a month or so to sell.

Yes, we don’t generally cover traditional hybrids at InsideEVs, but honestly, that’s really not even an issue, since only a few of the best-sellers are such (and both are variants of the Toyota Prius, which arguably paved the way for where we are today with EV adoption). Let’s take a look at the study’s results:

Winnebago Reveals Electric Healthcare RV: Range Over 100 Miles

Here is the first all-electric Mobile Lung Unit (eMLU)

Samsung’s NeuroLogica, Winnebago Industries and Motiv Power Systems jointly developed an all-electric Mobile Healthcare Vehicle – Mobile Lung Unit (eMLU), available on display in San Francisco, at both CALSTART’s Global Commercial Vehicle Drive to Zero Workshop on September 11th and the Global Climate Action Summit September 12-14.

The eMLU is based on the Ford F-53 and can go 85-125 miles (136-200 km) on a single charge, which sounds like it’s more than enough to move from one site to another. On-board equipment includes the world’s first portable, full-body, 32-slice CT scanner.

 

According to the press release, the eMLU will bring $150,000$200,000 in combined diesel fuel and maintenance savings over the long-term.

“With the goal to increase patient access to healthcare through a mobile unit with reduced vehicle emissions, Winnebago Industries, Inc. (NYSE : WGO ) announced today the development of the first all-electric Mobile Lung Unit (eMLU). Powered by a Ford F-53 based EPIC® 6 all-electric chassis from Motiv Power Systems, the specialty healthcare vehicle features the state-of-the-art Samsung NeuroLogica BodyTom Elite ®, the world’s first portable, full-body, 32-slice CT scanner.

The eMLU vehicle is wrapped featuring the American Lung Association and the Ad Council’s Saved By The Scan initiative to promote the early detection of lung cancer through screening. According to the American Lung Association, approximately 8 million people in the U.S. are at high risk for lung cancer and are eligible for screening. While the United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends lung cancer screening through low-dose CT scanners for those considered at high risk, screening is currently underutilized. To help increase awareness and availability of screening for those considered high risk, the eMLU can travel city-to-city to provide easy access to lung diagnostic services.  Individuals can take a lung cancer screening eligibility quiz at SavedByTheScan.org.”

  • Vehicle holds enough charge for eight hours of service plus round-trip travel to and from its home facility
  • Vehicle charges to half its full capacity in two hours and 75 percent of capacity in four hours
  • Vehicle has completed significant road testing and delivers an expected range of 85 to 125 miles on a full charge.

Winnebago partnered with Motiv Power Systems, Inc., the U.S. market leader in chassis for medium-duty electric vehicles, for the development and supply of the EPIC all-electric powered chassis after their joint strategic partnership announcement earlier this year. Based on the average cost of fuel in the US, the eMLU is expected to save $150,000$200,000 in combined diesel fuel and maintenance savings. Winnebago anticipates the ROI of eMLU vehicles compared to internal combustion engine versions to be as little as three years.”

Audi e-Tron Becomes First Vehicle To Integrate Toll Payment Module

Vehicle integrated toll payment technology to be launched as standard equipment on Audi e-tron.

Audi is set to handle one of the most annoying aspects of both the daily commute and longer range trips: the toll. While the German car maker won’t be able to lessen traffic jams, they will implement what they call an integrated toll payment technology. In a nutshell, this allows you to declutter your windshield by utilizing an Integrated Toll Module (ITM) – a toll transponder built into the vehicle’s rearview mirror – and use the device to access select toll roads in the U.S. and in Canada.

While right now, this will only be available to North American customers, hopefully, we’ll see a similar technological solution employed by Audi to allow e-tron drivers to pass through automatic and electronic toll systems used by many European countries. The idea is simple: replace the legacy system (necessitating planting either a sticker or an electronic device somewhere behind your windshield) with a new toll payment solution, allowing you to pass through scanners or automatic toll checkers, with ease. This mirror-based toll payment solution gives convenient access to the country’s toll roads while helping to eliminate windscreen clutter. Furthermore, it allows drivers to manage multiple toll accounts – all from a single device.

According to Audi, the drivers will be able to adjust module settings through the vehicle’s MMI – including turning the ITM on and off as well as changing the occupant settings for HOV/HOT lanes. And we can see the use of this system expanded to automatic parking lot ramps, garage entries, all the way to the not so positive big brother utilization that keeps track of every move you make. But hey, we’re pretty sure that every device employed by any of our agencies already has the capacity to do that even now. So, why worry? And we’re pretty sure most will be willing to exchange some part of their privacy to allow them to travel faster & easier.

The Audi e-tron prototype on recuperation test at Pikes Peak

The ITM system in question is built for Audi by Gentex Corporation.  The company also already supplies automatic-dimming mirrors for all Audi vehicles. According to Audi, the ITM technology is compatible with existing tolling agencies nationwide and can be registered with a driver’s current account, new account, or a nationwide tolling account.

In less than 10 days, Audi will reveal the full specifications and pricing for the e-tron. Furthermore, potential customers will have all the details available, allowing them to configure their e-tron and reserve their vehicle on the official Audi USA website. Once again, the reservation is made by a refundable $1,000 payment. The e-tron is the first in the line of three future battery-electric vehicles that Audi plans to debut by 2020, with nearly 30 percent of its customers in the U.S. anticipated to go electric by 2025.
