The US generated a record 18% of its electricity from wind and solar in March

Last month, the US generated 18% of its electricity from wind and solar (59 TWh) for the first time. That beat the previous record set in March 2021 (53 TWh), according to new data from global energy think tank Ember.

Anovion seeks to secure North American supply chain for synthetic graphite

A new company has joined the growing North American battery material industry. Anovion has been launched with “key assets contributed by affiliates of Amsted Graphite Materials,” and the acquisition of the battery materials division of Pyrotek, a manufacturer of synthetic graphite anode material.

The company boasts a capacity for anode powder graphitization of 5,000 tpa (tons per annum), which it claims is the largest in North America today. An expansion plant, planned to launch by 2025, will boost capacity up to 50,000 tpa.

Anovion uses “proven, reliable, scalable graphitization technology to ensure a product with high crystallinity and low impurities.”

“Long-life batteries need high-purity, highly consistent anode material that drives strong preference for synthetic graphite,” said Ian McCallum, Chief Growth Officer at Anovion (formerly a VP at Amsted Graphite Materials). “Our integrated, 100% domestic supply chain includes US-sourced raw materials as well as multiple manufacturing operations, research and development hubs, and other office locations throughout the country.”

“Synthetic graphite is critical to the USA’s migration to an electrified future,” said Eric Stopka, CEO of Anovion. “But foreign producers, overwhelmingly from China, have controlled the global supply of anode material. Launching Anovion is a huge step toward securing the supply chain of our electrified future in the United States and throughout North America.”

Anovion says its pilot operations include a proprietary thermal treatment process that brings its direct emissions to near zero, and uses clean, cost-effective hydroelectric power.

“Anovion uses advanced technologies and follows environmentally responsible manufacturing practices that yield high purity and exceptional quality without compromising throughput,” said Dr. Jeremy Schrooten, VP of Technology at Anovion (formerly of Pyrotek).

CSM’s new Split system for measuring current, voltage and power

Measurement technology manufacturer CSM has introduced a new measurement product composed of three modules for the high-frequency measurement of current, voltage and power in high-voltage power cables.

The High-Voltage Breakout Module Split (HV BM Split) is comprised of an HV SBM I open module for measuring busbars, an HV SBM I for measuring the power cables through a connection to cable glands and ring terminals, and the HV SAM 1.1 module, which acquires data and transmits it through a CAN bus. The HV SBM I can also be swapped for an HV SBM I C that connects high-voltage cables with an Amphenol PL300/PL500 connector system or an HV SBM I open shunt module that can be directly installed.

The system’s compactness was designed for EVs and hybrids with little installation space, production-intent vehicles and competitive vehicles. The split layout enables distributed installations such as in test vehicles, between vehicle components, through cable ducts, or inside components such as e-axles and batteries.

The HV BM Split is based on CSM’s HV Breakout Module, and is capable of measuring currents from 10 to 2,000 A and voltages up to 1,000 V. The measuring range is dimensioned up to 2,000 V.

The company says the HV SBM modules, excluding the HV SBM I open, are compliant with EN61010:1-2010 and are easily installed.

US electric car sales jumped to an impressive record high last quarter

Electric car sales in the United States jumped to a record high of over 200,000 vehicles during the last quarter (Q1 2022).

It’s a good sign, but the US EV market is still extremely reliant on Tesla and California.

Mary Barra says GM will begin tying executive compensation to success of its EV targets

In a recent interview, General Motors (GM) CEO Mary Barra stated that long-term executive compensation will be contingent upon the American automaker reaching specific targets for its transition into electrification. With some bold targets already in place, what better way to get the suits paid than to dangle a zero-emissions carrot in front of them?

Formula E reveals faster, lighter, and much more angular Gen3 car ahead of Monaco ePrix

Formula E has revealed the much-anticipated “Gen3” car, which will race in the 2023 season, with significantly improved performance over the current Gen2 cars. And an angular body which is – let’s say – “polarizing.”

The unveiling happened in Monaco ahead of this weekend’s Monaco ePrix, where racing commences on Saturday morning (check here for ways to watch).
