Johnson Matthey plans to exit battery materials market
Johnson Matthey has been working to commercialize its high-nickel cathode materials for the automotive industry, but has now concluded that the potential returns from its battery materials business will not be adequate to justify further investment. Citing competition from alternative technologies and other manufacturers, the company’s board has decided to pursue the sale of all or parts of the business.
Chief Executive Robert MacLeod said, “While the testing of our eLNO battery materials with customers is going well, the marketplace is rapidly evolving, with increasing commoditization and lower returns. This decision will allow us to accelerate our investment and focus on more attractive growth areas, especially where we have leadership positions, such as in hydrogen technologies, circularity and the decarbonization of the chemicals value chain.”

BMW i Ventures invests in LFP cell developer Our Next Energy
BMW i Ventures will invest in Our Next Energy (ONE), a Michigan-based energy storage company that’s working to develop longer-range, lower-cost batteries. ONE will use the investment to scale production of its first products.
ONE has demonstrated two proprietary technologies. The first, called Aries, uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry in a structural cell-to-pack architecture that offers high cell-to-pack ratios and system-level energy density, and also eliminates nickel- and cobalt-based chemistries. The second technology, dubbed Gemini, uses ONE’s proprietary energy management system and chemistry in a dual-battery range-extender architecture.
“Our Next Energy is working to fundamentally reinvent the battery while focusing on sustainability, safety and cost—three key factors which will help speed the development and adoption of battery electric vehicles,” said Baris Guzel, Partner at BMW i Ventures.
“BMW i Ventures has a proven track record of successful collaboration with startups with leading technologies to shape future mobility,” said Mujeeb Ijaz, CEO of Our Next Energy.

Ricardo receives UK government funding to optimize EV climate control systems
Engineering services provider Ricardo has received funding from the UK’s Office for Zero Emissions Vehicles, in partnership with Innovate UK, for a project to optimize in-car thermal and energy management systems to improve EV range and battery performance.
Partnering with Jaguar Land Rover and using a Jaguar I-PACE as a demonstrator vehicle, engineers will look holistically at vehicle thermal management and use digital modelling techniques to optimize the thermal and control systems. The research seeks to optimize energy consumption and passenger comfort, with the aim of increasing range and reducing overall cost.
Ricardo President Teri Hawksworth said, “The UK Government has committed to banning the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030. There is a real need for innovative technology solutions which will drive cost out of electrification and enhance electric vehicle performance, efficiency, safety and cost.”

Harley-Davidson’s hilarious e-bike video satirizes cycling culture, teaches you to ‘just enjoy the ride’
It’s been a while since I had a genuine belly laugh from a supposedly-comical brand marketing video. But Harley-Davidson’s “e-bike guru” did just that as it poked and prodded its way through cycling culture stereotypes on its way to landing a surprisingly relatable message about simply enjoying riding.

Here’s why hybrids have become a top target for thieves
The 2004-2009 Prius is the one in which the word “iconic” started to apply to Toyota’s hybrid trendsetter. Even though there had been an earlier Prius, this one’s 55-mpg window sticker, distinctive kammback silhouette and, soon, various celebrity sightings all made it an understated, eco-chic way to be noticed. And now, it…
