MAN Truck & Bus starts series production of the all-electric Lion’s City E

MAN Truck & Bus began series production of battery-powered city buses in October at its plant in Starachowice, Poland.

The first customer vehicles to come off the line are 12-meter solo versions of the Lion’s City E: 17 of these will be heading for Hamburg-Holstein’s public transit agency. Malmö, Sweden has placed an order for 22 units. The articulated version of the Lion’s City E should go into series production in the first half of 2021.

The all-electric MAN Lion’s City E will be built on the same production line as the company’s legacy buses, despite the large differences between the electric and diesel models. MAN says 30 to 40% of the body shell alone is different, to say nothing of the electric driveline, batteries and other high-voltage components. As part of the production preparation process in Starachowice, new systems had to be purchased or existing ones upgraded, processes had to be re-engineered, and 3,500 employees went through extensive training.

The first two MAN e-buses went into service in Hamburg at the end of 2019, and the MAN demo fleet has been undergoing extensive field trials in scheduled service in Germany, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands and France.

MAN’s electric buses have also been undergoing extensive extreme-weather testing. The Lion’s City E showed off its ability to withstand temperatures of minus 30 degrees C above the Arctic Circle, and also braved the heat of the Sierra Nevada in Badajoz, Spain. In summer temperatures of over 35 degrees C, the new e-buses completed a full 16-hour shift, covering an entire 284 km route.

“The results of summer testing show that our electric bus clearly meets the ambitious targets we have set for important issues such as heating and air conditioning,” says Jörg Junginger, Head of Engineering Bus Vehicle Testing. “The longitudinal dynamics of the bus have also undergone extensive testing to ensure that passengers always have a safe and comfortable journey, even in the event of significant inclination and power requests.”

Pete Buttigieg wants to put ‘millions’ of electric cars on US roads

Pete Buttigieg, casually known as “Mayor Pete” since he was mayor of South Bend, Indiana, for eight years, was nominated last week by President-elect Joe Biden to be secretary of transportation. Buttigieg reiterated what he wants for the future of electric cars in the US late yesterday afternoon.

Nexperia launches AEC-Q101-qualified, leadless CAN-FD protection diodes

Semiconductor manufacturer Nexperia has announced new leadless ESD protection devices for CAN-FD applications. Devices are available in leadless packages with side-wettable flanks that enable AOI tools to be used. Fully AEC-Q101-qualified, the PESD2CANFDx series parts are designed to provide ESD and RF performance, and save PCB space.

Nexperia says its new DFN1412D-3 and DFN1110D-3 leadless DFN packages with side-wettable flanks occupy 80% less PCB space than traditional SOT23 and SOT323 packages while delivering improved thermal behavior due to a larger internal lead frame that includes a heatsink and thermal pad.

The company says its PESD2CANFDx diodes are ESD-robust because the parts have low clamping voltages of 33 V at IPP = 1 A and low dynamic resistance of 0.7 Ω. Nexperia also says its ESD protection devices offer very good RF switching parameters, featuring a mixed-mode insertion loss of +20 dB at 300 MHz.

Product manager Lukas Droemer said, “CAN-FD is an important bus in automotive in-vehicle networks, but devices must be protected against ESD. Another essential requirement for automotive applications is the ability to use AOI. Our new devices in leadless packages meet both these requirements, providing a high-performance alternative to leaded SMD packages. The PESD2CANFDx series fulfills all CAN-FD specification requirements and exceeds the requirements of AEC-Q101 by two times.”

20 devices are available now in the DFN1412D-3 and DFN1110D-3 packages for automotive and industrial applications, including CAN/CAN-FD, FlexRay, SENT and LVDS.

ABB and AFC Energy to develop fuel cell-powered EV charging solution

Charging giant ABB has formed a strategic partnership with fuel cell developer AFC Energy to create a charging solution for grid-constrained locations. The system will combine ABB’s energy storage solution and DC fast chargers with AFC Energy’s hydrogen fuel cells to provide a solution for charging sites with limited grid connections.

AFC Energy says its standard solution provides power for charging infrastructure in locations where traditionally a diesel generator would be used.

The companies plan to have their new product ready for deployment in the UK, Europe, US and elsewhere, by the second half of 2021.

“This partnership with AFC Energy allows us to continue to push the boundaries of e-mobility, specifically targeting off-grid applications and thus enabling a much wider reach of e-mobility based on clean energy,” said Frank Muehlon, Head of ABB’s global business for E-mobility Infrastructure Solutions. “AFC Energy is uniquely positioned with their cost-effective alkaline-based fuel cell technology, which makes it a perfect match.”

“Our partnership with AFC Energy offers potential beyond the traditional EV market,” Muehlon concludes. “The DC fast charging system will have applications for commercial and logistics carriers, marine and urban transport. Sustainable solutions are also being developed for other growing segments like data centers and utilities to enable optimized carbon footprint.”

Volvo Group delivers electric construction vehicles for major construction project in Paris

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has delivered an all-electric Volvo FE Electric truck with an electrically powered crane, as well as a Volvo ECR25 Electric compact excavator, to French contractor Eiffage. Long-term Volvo customer Eiffage is the first recipient of the vehicles in France.

Eiffage will put the machines to work on the Grand Paris Express transport project, a rapid transit initiative in the French capital that will add 200 km (120 miles) of new track and 68 new stations that will ultimately serve two million passengers per day.

The Volvo ECR25 Electric compact excavator features far lower noise and vibration levels than traditional diesel machines. The 2.5-ton machine delivers the same performance as its diesel counterpart, and its battery pack supports up to four hours of work time, depending on the application.

“Make no mistake, electric machines are not going to remain a niche product area,” said Melker Jernberg, President of Volvo CE. “Over the course of the next years and decades they will become the dominant source of low-or-no-emission power.”

“By 2030, we want over a third of the machines the Volvo Group sells to be electric,” said Volvo Group CEO Martin Lundstedt. “We can’t do this alone, we want to do this together with our customers, partners like Eiffage and the wider society.”
