Honda works on second EV, quits diesel, and puts hydrogen on hold

There’s no doubt that Honda fell behind on electric cars. Beat up the company as much as you like about its meager EV offerings to date. But also consider signs that the Japanese automaker is slowly correcting its course. In addition to introducing the small Honda E in Europe next year, Honda is working on a second EV for about 2022. Other small victories include quitting diesel, putting hydrogen indefinitely on hold, and agreeing with California’s emissions standards.  more…

Tesla update forks features for Model 3s built pre/post April 2019

Last week we reported that the latest over-the-air Tesla software update improves driving visualization to detect and render traffic cones. Then on Thursday we also shared a video of a Tesla navigating its way through traffic cones, courtesy Tesla hacker @greentheonly. Now @greentheonly is reporting that the traffic cone feature is only being delivered to Tesla owners with the ‘Hardware 3’ chip (HW3). This is significant, as it’s the first time that software features (in this case, Auto Lane Change and Navigate-on-Autopilot) will be forked for Tesla drivers depending on when their Tesla was built.

GM releases perfect 200+mile range Crossover EV for US market…in China

GM announced two weeks ago that it would be supporting Donald Trump’s rollback of EV emissions standards by siding with the administration vs. California. You would think that GM – with its pioneering Bolt EV and “zero emissions future” initiatives – would support lowering emissions. But something has gone terribly wrong at GM over the past few years in EVs.

The latest indication of this is an announcement that the company would be releasing a Menlo crossover EV – which would likely do well in a US market – in China alone.
