Having already expanded into several countries throughout Europe, Build Your Dreams (BYD) has announced that sales of its EVs will begin in the UK this quarter. As the veteran Chinese automaker continues to expand its BEV production and sales presence around the globe, we wonder if 2023 is the year that BYD Auto usurps Tesla for the top spot in global sales.
Are in-wheel motors the future? We’ll see—no OEM that we know of is using them in any large volumes yet, but companies are definitely still pursuing the technology. In-wheel proponents point to significant space and weight savings, which can deliver reduced energy consumption.
Motor-maker Elaphe and component supplier McLaren Applied have partnered to develop an in-wheel propulsion system for “a vehicle segment of highly efficient and hyper-responsive electric vehicles.”
The system pairs McLaren’s inverter technology with Elaphe’s direct-drive in-wheel motors and vehicle controls. The companies say it offers “best-in-class long-range cruising efficiency and unmatched vehicle controllability, with a torque response five times faster compared to existing systems.”
Elaphe says its in-wheel technology has demonstrated energy efficiency of over 97% on vehicles such as the Lightyear Zero and Aptera’s EV. With torque densities up to 460 Nm/liter and 100 Nm/kg, Elaphe’s in-wheel technology “takes advantage of the high control bandwidth of each wheel to enable premium safety capability.”
McLaren Applied specializes in high-performance power electronics, and has supplied inverters for both Formula 1 and Formula E since 2013. McLaren’s 800 V silicon carbide inverter, IPG5, offers “unrivalled gravimetric and volumetric power density of 90 kVA/kg and 130 kVA/L respectively, variable switching frequency, and efficiency of up to 99%.”
Circular materials technology company Umicore and clean technology company Nano One Materials have signed a nonexclusive joint development agreement (JDA) on production process technologies for cathode active materials (CAM) for lithium-ion batteries.
Umicore will evaluate Nano One’s patented M2CAM One-Pot process technology with the intention of integrating it with Umicore’s proprietary process technology for the production of high-nickel NMC (nickel, manganese, cobalt) CAM.
The companies report that their purpose in entering into the JDA is “to leverage their respective technologies and know-how to further increase the throughput rate while reducing the costs and environmental footprint of CAM production.”
SEA Electric, a global leader in 100% electric commercial powertrain solutions, is leading the charge to eliminate CO2 emissions. The company announced it would convert 8,500 Toyota Hilux and Landcruiser to fully electric powerhouses to be used in the mining industry.
Some employees at Tesla’s Giga Berlin have reportedly voiced their concerns to officials at the nearby IG Metall union office.

Electric bikes are a dime a dozen these days, so it’s rare to find one that stands out from the pack. When I first saw the Lectric XP Lite, it was clear that it was different from the pack in a few key ways. On the surface, the Lectric XP Lite e-bike looks like the […]
